Buying the console

The Switch 2 comes with a pair of Joy-Con 2 in the box, so a console on its own is enough to start playing. What it does not include is a second set of controllers, which is the thing most people come back for within a fortnight if anyone else in the house plays.

If you already know two of you will be playing, buying a spare set at the same time saves a trip and usually a delivery fee.

Controllers, and which one to get

The Pro Controller is the one to buy if you play anything for long stretches — it is a full-sized pad and far more comfortable across a long session than the Joy-Con are. It is the standard upgrade for a reason.

The Charging Grip is the cheaper middle option: it holds the Joy-Con in a pad-like shell and charges them while you play, which solves the flat-controller problem without replacing anything. If you mostly play in short bursts, it is enough.

Spare Joy-Con 2 are what you want for local multiplayer specifically, since a single pair splits into two controllers for two players.

A note on game-key cards

Several Switch 2 releases ship as a game-key card rather than a cartridge holding the game. The card is a licence: it goes in the slot, the console downloads the game, and the card has to stay in to play. You still own something physical and can lend or resell it, but it needs an internet connection to set up and free space on the console.

We label these on the product page so you know which you are buying before it arrives, not after.

Cases and storage

A case matters more on a handheld than people expect, because the screen is the expensive part and it travels in a bag. If the console leaves the house, buy one with it.

If you are collecting the Pokémon side of things too, the card pouches and vault cases we carry are built for the same bag — they hold game cards and TCG cards without either rattling loose.

Questions we get asked

Does the Switch 2 come with controllers?
Yes — a pair of Joy-Con 2 is included with the console. You only need to buy controllers separately if you want a second set for multiplayer, or a Pro Controller for longer sessions.
What is a game-key card?
It is a physical card that unlocks a download rather than holding the game itself. You put it in the slot, the console downloads the game, and the card must stay inserted to play. It can still be lent or resold like a normal cartridge, but it needs internet to set up and space on the console.
Pro Controller or Charging Grip?
Pro Controller if you play for long stretches and want the comfort of a full-sized pad. Charging Grip if you are happy with the Joy-Con and mainly want them charged and easier to hold. The Grip is considerably cheaper and does not replace the Joy-Con.
Are your consoles the Singapore set?
Everything we list is stock we hold, and the product page states the exact edition and region where that matters. If you are unsure before ordering, message us and we will confirm which version is on the shelf.
